EMISnews #4

EMISnews is EMIS’ periodical newsletter that keeps you updated on our school, its students, staff and the progress of its mission of Making Education a Force for Peace and Sustainability in the Middle East!

EMIS is an international boarding school in Israel that teaches both the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program and the British Cambridge Program with a focus on Entrepreneurship, Sustainability and Peace. You may view the EMIS short documentary video at
this link.

EMIS' third year started with a burst of energy and tremendous achievement!  Our student body has now increased to 160 and we are excited to have students from several new countries such as India and Sweden. With 40% of our students hailing from the Middle East, we take pride in announcing we have reached a new milestone by enrolling our first student from Gaza. This marks a true achievement for EMIS in changing mind-sets in this region. What is seen as inconceivable  by some is a reality we create every day at EMIS.

EMIS is in the midst of its admission process for outstanding young individuals from around the world to attend the 2017-2019 EMIS class (Year 4) applications for class 2017 are currently being accepted. Greetings from the Teachers!

The teaching faculty is very excited to start this new year at EMIS! After the impressive results of our 2016 graduates, we are gearing up to push ourselves and our students even further this year. We believe in working hand in hand with families to give our students the best experience possible and helping them live up to their utmost potential.

One of the best things about teaching at EMIS is the diversity of not only our student body, but also our staff.  We have several exciting new teachers here at EMIS this year:

Helen Lucas, our new DP Coordinator and Global Politics teacher from Australia.
Shani Ben-Aroya, our new CAS Coordinator and English/Drama teacher from England.
Lubna Dadija, our new Arabic teacher from Israel.
Zoltan Veres, our new global politics teacher from Hungary.
Hannah Lang, our new Math teacher from the United States.
Yuval Dagan, our new Arabic AB initio teacher from Israel.
Paula Elion, our new Spanish teacher from Argentina.
Shalva Jin, our new Mandarin teacher from China.

We welcome them to the EMIS family and look forward to a wonderful year!

EMIS Founder Oded Rose presents at the UWC International Congress

EMIS Founder and UWC alum, Oded Rose (PC 82), was invited to present his journey from Pearson College some 35 years ago up to the establishment of EMIS in 2014, and the impact that the two-year old EMIS already has in the region today.  Oded and Maya Kogan, EMIS Director of Admissions and Marketing, attended the two-day Congress (October 28-29) in Trieste and also presented Oded's and EMIS story on the Impact Display section, highlighting UWC students and alum projects around the world.

During his presentation, Oded also presented the EMIS Video and answered questions from the audience. The presentation and display generated a lot of interest by UWC students and alums from around the world in ways to cooperate and support EMIS and its quest for peace in the Middle East.

YOCOPAS - YOUTH ORGANIZED COLLABORATION OF PEACE AND SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE  -  2016

Last month EMIS hosted its second annual YOCOPAS conference.
YOCOPAS whose mission is:

"TO ENHANCE PEACE AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST THROUGH NETWORKING OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS AS AN ACCELERATOR FOR CHANGE", is a platform that was initiated by EMIS educators and students, to that platform we have invited schools and organizations from the region - from Israel, Palestine and Jordan to join and partner with us.

This year the response was amazing from our first year when 3 schools partnered with YOCOPAS to 10 schools participating in 2016.  In the future we expect to expand beyond the region and invite schools from other parts of the world.

The conference ran for three days, our 70 guests students stayed in tents that were spread around the campus.

The diverse program was developed  together with all partnering schools, it included:
ice breaker games, sports activities, lecture on curiosity,
13 varied ,challenging and inspirational workshops focusing on Peace and sustainability, reflections and a visit to the Ariel Sharon environmental rehabilitation project.
EMIS students formed a student committee that includes representatives from the partnering schools. Meetings and conference calls will take place throughout the year.
There is much to do in order to achieve our mission. "It was a mind-openning experience" said R form Gaza.

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) unanimously accepts EMIS as a regional project for cooperation

another 14 countries from North Africa and the Middle East, including Arab countries,
Palestine and Israel, recently accepted EMIS as a project for regional cooperation at a high level.

meeting held in Amman Jordan. All 43 countries voted in favor of this project. This is
the first time an Israeli project is accepted by the prestigious organization which validates
the mission and vision of EMIS of promoting education as a force for peace and
sustainability in the region.

MUN Confrence

On the weekend of October 28-29, EMIS was honored to hold its first ever multi-institutional MUN conference, in partnership with Gymnasium Blankenese of Hamburg, Germany.

EMIS was honored to host the German delegation from Gymnasium Blankenese, who had a chance to glimpse at the international boarding school experience, with its wide range of community initiatives, specifically our experienced and national award-winning MUN team.

For the first time ever, external students were hosted on campus for a MUN conference, in which our honorable guests from Germany were trained on basic MUN and debate skills, after which we proceeded to an intense two-day conference.

The conference strategically tackled issues that have been boulders to international development and policy in recent history, in which the Disarmament Committee attempted to resolve global issues regarding the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the trade and transfer of weaponry on an international level, and the Human Rights Committee delved into the Syrian refugee crisis and educational equity.

As they debated clauses and national policies, delegates from both participating schools were highy impressive, showing clear evidence of experience quickly fostered over the days of the conference.

Mentor Trips

While a strong focus on academia remains a fundamental aspect of the EMIS core values, there comes a time where a student must explore and enjoy his or her surroundings. In accordance with such beliefs, our mentors have begun taking their students on trips around the country, delving into the ancient history of the region as well as its modern developments. The occasional ''outing", as our students call it, allows them to put aside thoughts of school and replace them with a breath of fresh air.

EMISers Around the World

After two exhilarating yet challenging years, EMIS' inaugural class have stored away their caps and gowns and moved on to disperse around the world. However, the bonds of fellowship and friendship fostered at EMIS transcend borders and alumni continue to cross paths around the world. From Harvard and MIT in Boston, to Jacobs in Germany and NYU in Abu Dhabi, our (fomer) students remain EMISers at heart.
